Actors need to make quick, strong choices and commit to the story. You don't have to submit your headshot and resume around here, just come on down. Casting starts at 7:30 pm. If it's your first time, come say hello, grab a beer, and watch the readings. You'll get an idea of how we work.
For its 16th season, the CRS is moving to a once a month schedule with a special event or two thrown into the mix.

ATTENTION WRITERS!
At the CRS, it's all about the writers. We bring both established and up-and-coming writers out from behind the scenes and into the spotlight. The CRS provides an ongoing community space where artists come to share their work, connect with one another, and create more. It is both a supportive and challenging environment for writers. We program all kinds of writing: excerpts from feature-length plays and screenplays, short films, one-act plays, monologues, radio plays, spoken word poetry, your diary, whatever. If it's good, we want it. Hear your words come alive. When your script is chosen for the CRS, we cast professional actors on the spot to bring your words off the page in front of a live audience. Summer Dream Writers Workshops

Instructors: Evelyn Lau, Steve Duncan, Christine Leclerc and Jen Currin.
Location: Christianne’s Lyceum of Literature and Art

3696 West 8th, Vancouver, B.C.

Evelyn Lau's fiction titles include Fresh Girls and Other Stories (HarperCollins), Other Women (Random House) and Choose Me (Doubleday). Her non-fiction titles include Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid (HarperCollins) and Inside Out: Reflections on a Life So Far (Doubleday). Her poetry includes the award-winning You are Not Who You Claim (Beach Holme), Oedipal Dreams and In the House of Slaves (Coach House). Treble (Polestar Book Publishers), her fourth book of poetry is everything we expect of Lau: it is precise, elegant, honest and powerful. Workshop: Sunday August 23rd (1 pm - 2:30pm) Bring your questions to an informal Q&A session with author and poet. Evelyn Lau. Evelyn will be pleased to answer your questions and share her experiences re: getting started as a writer - submitting to literary magazines and contests, working with agents and editors, and the challenges of earning a living as a creative writer. She also welcomes engaging in a discussion around the writing process itself: the issues that arise around autobiographical/confessional writing, the various tricks to staying motivated and inspired, and the curious pleasures of the revision process.

S.R. Duncan: Shoe-string Marketing and Publicity Expert S.R. Duncan is a poet, performer, graphic designer, blogger and host of Wax Poetic Radio Show. His blogs include Commercial Drive Live,  BC Entertainment Facts & Trivia and My Life as a Blog. Workshop: Sunday August 23rd   (11 am - 12:30pm) Basic Chapbook Design and Marketing. Be your own publisher. Join the ranks of literary giants like Hunter S. Thompson and Ray Bradbury and learn how to create a “chapbook” (your very own professional-looking published booklet) step-by-step, from editing through basic graphic design, right through to distribution. This unique, hands-on workshop starts by getting each participant to assemble their own text book! We go on to: - look at the benefits and pitfalls of self-publishing - offer various modern and rare examples of this ancient type of publication! - give you tips for marketing and publicizing your book on a shoestring budget! A basic knowledge of computers and word processing programs like Microsoft Word is required. Reference material provided. Facilitated by poet, performer, and long-time graphic designer, S.R. Duncan.

Christine Leclerc, originally from Montreal, now lives in Vancouver. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Her work has appeared in 42opus, Dig, FRONT, FU, Memewar, OCHO, Pistola, subTerrain, terry, the Worksound gallery, and is forthcoming in Interim. Leclerc is the author of Counterfeit, a book of poetry published by Capilano University Editions (CUE) in fall 2008. She teaches creative writing at Langara College Continuing Studies. Workshop: Saturday August 29th (11 am - 12:30pm) Ekphrasis is the graphic, often dramatic description of a visual work of art, though in ancient times ekphrasis referred to the description of any thing, person, or experience. Join Christine Leclerc for an exploration of ekphrastic poetry. Participants will become familiar with existing works of ekphrastic poetry and complete a number of writing exercises. Participants are also invited to bring objects to write from, though this is not required.
Jen Currin has published two books of poems, The Sleep of Four Cities (Anvil Press, 2005) and Hagiography (Coach House Books, 2008). The Inquisition Yours is forthcoming from Coach House in 2010. She has taught creative writing for many years, most recently at Langara College Continuing Studies and the John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (online). Workshop: Saturday August 29th (1 pm - 3:00pm) Perched between poetry and prose, the prose poem occupies a tricky space. It is genre-bending by nature, and encourages flights of fancy, surrealist moments, dreams, circular arguments…In this two-hour workshop we will practice writing prose poems and read some of the best this genre has to offer.

Every Saturday

Live Flamenco in Kits
As a result of the extravagant features of the dance, the word fandango is used as a synonym for a quarrel, a big fuss or a brilliant exploit. Flamenco Coast certainly intends to take you on a brilliant exploit by performing the festive rhythm of many in flamenco. This is combined with the Sevillanas, a rhythm named after the city of Seville , whose streets lined with orange trees, weeping fountains and breezy courtyards inspired the dance performed in festivals. Experience an evening of power and passion where the best is yet to come. Every Saturday, 7pm, at the Wired Monk, 2610 West 4th in Kits. Tix $8.
