Sept 19th:
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
"Orphaned and penniless at the height
of the Depression, Jacob Jankowski escapes everything he knows by jumping on a
passing train—and inadvertently runs away with the circus". So begins Water for
Elephants, Sara Gruen’s darkly beautiful tale about the characters who inhabit
the less-than-greatest show on earth. Jacob finds a place tending the circus
animals, including a seemingly untrainable elephant named Rosie. He also comes
to know Marlena, the star of the equestrian act—and wife of August, a
charismatic but cruel animal trainer. Caught between his love for Marlena and
his need to belong in the crazy family of travelling performers, Jacob is freed
only by a murderous secret that will bring the big top down.”

PRESS RELEASE
Pandora’s
Collective Citizenship Award
a message from
Executive Director, Bonnie Nish
I would like to take a moment to announce the recipient of this
years Pandora’s Collective Citizenship Award. This is one award that is not
voted on but that I get to pick. This is an important award because it goes to
someone that I feel has contributed to the writing community in a significant
way. And this person has certainly done that. About 8 years ago I met a woman on
a playground and we started to talk about poetry. Then there she was at the
Surrey Writers Conference approaching me at our table. Since that time she has
become a friend, a colleague, an inspiration to myself and so many. In her quiet
way she supports as many writers as she can to submit work, to read, to push
ourselves. She encourages us and she puts herself out there so that we may find
a space where we are safe while trying to go beyond what we thought we were
capable of. To me that is one of the best qualities an educator and a mentor can
have. It is with great pleasure that I give to you the recipient of this years
Pandora’s Collective Citizenship Award to an individual who has excelled in
their commitment to support writers within our community. The regional rep of
the Federation of BC Writers, an amazing poet herself, a PhD student, a mom and
wife and wonderful spirit; Daniela Elza !
Daniela
Elza has released more than 140 poems into the world (in more than 42
publications). Her interests lie in the gaps, rubs, and bridges between poetry,
language, and philosophy. She recently completed her first full length poetry
manuscript in which the crows have a lot to say. Daniela lives with her family
in Vancouver , and sporadically blogs at:

PRESS RELEASE
The South Delta Artists Guild's
Poets & Painters Book
is now available!
This book was inspired by an art and poetry exhibition
that was hosted by the South Delta Artists Guild and was a collaboration between
the South Delta Artists Guild and two writers’ groups, Pandora’s Collective and
World Poetry Café. Poets were invited to write a poem inspired by a work of art.
Alternatively, poets could submit poems that artists interpreted in paintings.
The result was a very successful exhibit that was well attended by the public,
the artists and the poets. It was an inspiring show of 95 paintings and 95
poems. This book contains many of the images and poems from the show.
To order the book please go to
www.SouthDeltaArtistsGuild.com and download the order form.

imagination! Their goal is to achieve in any given night such a diversity of
genres and styles that the event lives up to the ketchupy tally in its name. No
sign-up -- do what you want, when you feel. No amplification -- keeps the
audience concentration intentful and respectful, and is what separates our open
stage from an open mic (...no mic!)

Every Saturday
Live Flamenco in Kits
As a result of the extravagant features of the dance, the word fandango is used
as a synonym for a quarrel, a big fuss or a brilliant exploit. Flamenco Coast
certainly intends to take you on a brilliant exploit by performing the festive
rhythm of many in flamenco. This is combined with the Sevillanas, a rhythm named
after the city of Seville , whose streets lined with orange trees, weeping
fountains and breezy courtyards inspired the dance performed in festivals.
Experience an evening of power and passion where the best is yet to come. Every
Saturday, 7pm, at the Wired Monk, 2610 West 4th in Kits. Tix $8.
