First Place Winner: Meghan Smith
The Ambiguity of the Word Possible
My daughter lives in a town
no one ever visits. Last year they
cut off the only road, said there
was no funding. I screamed
but sound can't travel
in places no one breathes.
I imagine her children, their
small hands reaching for her. I ponder
if something so small can hold
such emptiness.
I spend my mornings watching
her weather, a small chance of
rain. The thin blue arrows
moving in meaningless circles. The
ambiguity of the word possible.
