Bereft

It happened so slowly we nearly missed it
the slipping away,
unceremonious,
inconsequential,
like a candle extinguished
on the church mantle
or a worm
wedged in some crevice
drowning in the long winter rains.

A heart
frozen by inattentive hands,
long cool nights
in beds
with crisp sheets
never turned down,
threads worn thin
from the fretful movement
of a body wasting in its
spiritual excrement,
until…
there was a death in the family today.
