Third Place Winner: Linda Carpenter

Breaking

we sit on the bench by the lake

where we always sit

smoking roll your owns and putting them out carefully in all this dry heat

a few feet down a fisherman fishes the weeds

I know him, not well

but I know who he is –

Frannie Frank's husband

too poor to buy meat, fishing from the bank each day

while she is off at night to play bingo

you aim your camera at something

I never ask what anymore, you won't say

Except I know it's no longer me

the man catches a legal sized fish

reels it in quickly

there is no sport to this

he removes the hook carefully

probably doesn't own many

I look at you looking thru the lens

the man

pulls out a screwdriver from a bag

the trout glinting in the sunlight

he slaps the fish over the head with it

it sounds like a heart

breaking.
