Third Place Winner: Daniela Elza

if this were                a picture

when the water is               this close

washing up against the walls of the house

we remember           (where the cracks are

fear seeps in             through the windows

under the doors.                  it trickles

at first          slowly             sinks into carpets

washes the claw feet           of furniture.

children find it amusing      then               cry

when their teddies refuse to float.             when

what they know                disappears and

they have to run up the stairs to parts of the house

(they do not understand.

even mama and papa cannot make it go away-

this turning               black below

as the sky turns                  blue above.

were this a picture               I could flip it

upside down and                 we'd be walking on

clouds.                                  the reflection of trees

stirring the depths of sky                 our tears

falling onto the roof             of our house.

filling the row boats.             shimmering

on black hats.           tears                we fail

to notice                    so busy salvaging-

turning           the sky           inside              out.
