First Place Winner: Caitlin Reid

It's plain [ : ( ]

1.)

Tammy comes

into the restaurant

            to have

                          something

            to do,                             to get

out of the house.                         Her cellph

one rings; she is popular. Our

bar is a good place for her

to receive calls. She orders

a glass of the house white

and then she goes to the wash

room to do coke on the toilet

tank. Tammy looks

in the mirror. She is

important. When she gets            up

to go it is always

abrupt and she always

asks the busboy for

a take‑out soup

container to take her

wine home with

her, the dregs.

11.

Tammy has cheap blonde streaks in her hair

matted down, her legs wobbly and

her nose big and blocked from blow and

her cell phone glued to her car, "See?

See‑the reason I want

a boyfriend is so he could chew the gum

for the first five minutes then give it to me,

so it's not so harsh, you know?"
