Writing trigger from Greenboathouse Book's variant project.

January's Variant

It wasn't enough anymore
to simply sleep in the same bed
night after night
watch snowfall around us
never stopping to count the flakes.
It was so simple
a shift in the conversation
as though we had been sliding on ice flows
which suddenly hit a jet stream
and melted away.
It gave us pause
dangerous perhaps
but needed,
a chance to lie back and observe
one another out of context.
Beached
we lay in waiting
unsure of the territory
curious to move on
away from this iceberg
we had casually built over months of inaction.
Leaving us space enough
to breathe again.
