Selected Poem:
Translation of a Berka
The blackness barely covered
The gloom in the air hovered
She refused to give in
They would not tell the story of where she’s been
Go against the grain
And surely they’ll remember your name
Expose your breast
You are nothing more than a guest
The casing that grounds your spirit here
It’s not your fault you’re a woman Dear
Show it all with Pride
It’s not fair – they cannot ask you to hide
You are nothing more than a man’s slave
Keep your mouth shut, dare not to rave
She believes in equality, fighting for her rights
Knowing she may die never allowed to feel the light
Close the door
Woman will be no more
Get back behind the veil
Or die for your tale
