Third Place Winner: Jenna Butler

nassau

dim clangor of
nassau night
attenuates her gaze

           daughter strung
           between your arms
           (parody of family)

acid-house music
rocks the quay
stars fibrillating
in backwash    oil-spackled sand

wife refuses
to meet your eyes
           absconding familiarity

your daughter wonders
if you are going to die

           one day
           (stupid bastard)

and it is only
ten years later
           in a bar     perhaps
           in an alley
           or snowswept street

it occurs to you

     the nascent grasp
of what she was really asking
