Third Place Winner Teen: Johnson Chan

Nocturne under a Pedestrian Light

Standing under a desolate red light

Cars approaching, headlights bright

Into the eyes a blinking sight

Looks above to find a starry night.

Head up for an instant, and

Finds an exact instant in time

A moment without progress,

Neither past nor future.

And still not present.

Coconsciousness transcends time

Like the unseen Burnt Norton

Or a minor quartet by the Deaf man

Or Sisyphus watching his rock,

Rolling down from the top.

The timeless ocean

Sings a Chopin berceuse…

Asks for sentimental hand

That leads across the sea to an island

A place where yellow fog is no more,

Stars and rainbows for all

The watchful eyes of the moon

Like a distorted reflection off a spoon.

I have seen Burnt Norton

When my heart finally paused…

Standing under a desolated read light

Cars approaching, headlights bright

Dense Grey towers do give fright

Nowhere to escape this plight.

Head down at the scarred concrete floor

Tick, tock…tick.tock…

Every second that drips by,

Still waiting for another second

To be sucked into the black hole of history.

Unconsciousness is free from

Neither past nor future

And still not present.

Red light turns into envy green,

And cars are told to stop,

Yet I stand still below the night sky,

Waiting for Godot.
