NORTHERN LIGHTS
We drove north in a rented convertible,
wrapped tightly in parkas like two wounds
swathed in gauze. The cold crept like a frost
beneath my skin and we dropped blotters of acid
to keep our blood from turning to ice.
I remember spreading my fingers to catch the wind
like feathers, gasping as we breached the horizon
to see aurora borealis. There were ripples of brilliant emerald
splayed across the snow that gleamed white like polished bone;
Northern Lights moving like a shining marble,
crushed in my hands, and smeared
across the sky.
