THE PHOTOGRAPHER YOU LOVED
He seduced you with simple things:
chardonnay in flute-necked wineglasses
and vinyl cracklings
of Leonard Cohen,
whining and moody.
The music sounded the way you
thought you might feel
in that moment of quiet and sting
following an open-palmed slap.
He exposed the contents
of his portfolio:
third world children
whose blood-smeared faces
were streaked with tears.
You wanted him to appreciate you
in the same way he appreciated
a Candomble priest
rattling necklaces of polished chicken bone.
When you were naked beneath him
he snatched fragments of you
with a shuddering lens that gobbled poses so rapidly
it made you nervous.
You wanted to stand next to him
when he submerged these prints in developing fluid.
You wanted him to weep when your silhouette
emerged from nothing.
