Words on Robson
Poetry Contest Winner: Daniela Elza
Rock, Paper, Scissors
I make this space with
words for you to enter
come in, help me push
the boundary I am placing
word by word, letter by letter
it is the holding of hands,
entwining of arms, the space
is clearly only meant for
meditation, a sanctuary from
war raging beyond the word
the wordlessness of pieces
scattered fireworks of flesh
and bone, and children
circumventing the edge
disappearing in something other
worth imagining.
Rock by rock we pile on
the burial site, black earth
we stomp to the only sound
that raging grief can make
Paper fills the sky with
a thousand thoughts, paper
soaring in its falling flooding wings
to escape the burning of a landing.
Only here paper covers rock.
In the aftermath
A broken scissors has only one blade
left to crush
and the fear has curdled in
the throat so hard
that cutting anything, even paper
is painful.
