First Place Winner: Elizabeth Smucker

Tango

Your shoulders look so tense my dear-

he leaves her broken-thumbed.

                                    I don't remember slicing antelope

She folds the dough over like a swollen diaper

and gives it a pat.

                                    or letting it burn when

She can't knead the bread one-handed. Well she could

but he isn't coming back.

your hand slid up my thigh

She stares at her reflection in the ice biting her fingers and wonders

how long it will take her, unkneaded, to ferment.

                                    we boiled over

Her heart is starving for cheese, but cannot find a knife. Instead

she cuts her tongue with whiskey.

                                    onto the splintered floor-

Her limbs won't stay awake. She tries to walk

but her leg bends. She capsizes.

                                    it left scars.

She clutches the carpet with her pinky, wishing

her thumb would work. She wants more to hold.
