First Place Winner: Jabez W. Churchill

The House

is woken floor by floor.
The sun,
goldfish upon the tiled roof,
shed their scales of flame
igniting the chambered nautilus,
room by room,
even to the dome of dreams.

The house,
a jade iguana,
pale and still in the night,
revives at the silver fingertips of dawn,
and greens even to the water in the well,
obsidian eyes of the dreamer.

The house,
enough of light and illusion,
smoulders
in the breathless afternoon.
The scales, incandescent dust,
one by one are snuffed out.
And the iguana sleeps,
opening the starry dome
of dreams.

Spanish Translation:

La casa

se despierta a pisos.
El sol, peces de oro
raspandose por el tejado,
echando sus escalas de fuego
encendiendo sala a sala
el caracol compartimentado
hasta la boveda de los suenos.

La casa,
iguana de jade
palida y quieta en la noche
se revive a caricias,
dedos plateados del alba,
y reverdece
hasta las aguas del pozo,
ojos obsidianas del sonador.

La casa
harta de luz e ilusiones
se sofoca en el jadeante atardecer.
Las escalas colgadas incandescentes
una por una se apagan.
Y la iguana se duerme
abriendo la boveda
estrellada de los suenos.
