Third Place Winner: Jabez W. Churchill

The ocean

does not speak
in words,
roar and hiss.
Nor does my grandfather's orchard reminisce,
long unattended trees
leafless
in the Winter's sun,
but quietly suggest
perhaps too new a green
not to be repressed from eyes
desensitized by speed,
distance multiplied by time,
loss and longing.
Memories
that swell beyond my vision,
break and hiss
phosphorescent in my dreams.
Moonlight
caught on whitewashed trunks
beneath a green
and rippling sky.

Spanish Translation:

La mar

no habla
con palabras,
puro rugido y silbar.
Tampoco relata
el huerto de mi abuelo,
arboles hace mucho desatendidos,
desnudos en el sol hiemal.
Sino suave sugieren
un verde
quizas demasiado tierno
para recordar
para ojos ya insensibles
par la velocidad,
distancia multiplicada por horas,
extranar y anorar,
recuerdos que se levantan
mas alla del horizonte
que se rompen,
puro rugido y silbar,
fosforescentes en mis suenios,
troncos iluminados por la luna
bajo el verde ondular.
