The following poems are group poems written by the
children of The Vancouver Public Library Book Camp. The subjects
given for the poems have been included as the titles so that you
can see where they started and where they ended up.
A special thank you to all that participated! It was an amazing
experience and we look forward to your future publications.
City
New York is a phoenix that keeps rising from the dust
yet it is a footprint on an endless beach.
The streets are the etched lined of the foot.
Busses are connecting people with places.
Street signs are the never ending mazes of New York.
Cell phone ring tones are the song
that you can’t get out of your head.
The people are a flood always going on.
People are the blood flowing to keep the city alive.
Alive is the city, forever awake.
Each building is but a strand of hair.
Like a wart on the face of the earth
the lights are the eyes that have gone to sleep
in a black-out haze.
The blackness holds an eternal silence
Alive but dead the city sleeps in blackness.
Like a phoenix the city will rise again
another mosaic of our world.

Dragon
Green and scaly, his name is Bailey
he crawls through the darkness glowing like slime.
He rolls in the mud
and eats the mud that's chocolate
all dirty and filthy he gets a stomach ache.
His mouth is red as blood
his teeth are white as pearls
they glisten in the sun.
he eats a hotdog bun
and finishes his day with lots of fun.
~ Composed by the Dangerous Dolphins
CIty
Cars are workers for the people who drive them.
Cities are giant dollhouses
and the people are the dolls.
They all go into the giant mall
try on clothes
and go to Moe’s.
After going to Moe’s they hit the road.
Roads are like rainbows
where there are lots of gigantic and furious cat fights,
where there are no more lights
and the electricity comes and blinds them.
The dolls are put away for another day.

City
The screaming people are annoyed
waiting for the rock concert to begin.
People are arriving at the bus stops
to have a ride in traffic.
People beg for change at the bus stops
weaselling and making false speeches,
“I’m blind, I’m Deaf: I need to get to a hostel”
but people just walk on.
The coyotes prowl in the alleys
squirrels are hunting for nuts
the rock band is warming up in the distance
the buildings stand tall engulfing the crowds in their shadows
the pollution makes artificial fog
people are still lining up in the ticket booth
standing, waiting for it to begin.
Someone comes out from behind the curtains
and says, “The rock concert begins.”
The cement sea sends waves of cars
people are happy this time
cats and dogs howl in the background
busses and cars pull up in masses
for the media coverage.
The rock star begins to sing
a song about the city.

Ocean
A bird flying over the sparkling water
a fish swimming in the shimmering sea
a fish away form that water swimming free
away from the water where he used to be.
The bird sweeps down and eats the fish
flying further and further with his wish.
A great white shark is hunting for seals
instead he finds a giant eel.
The eel saw a swimming fish
who knew the bird who got his wish.

Nature
Seeds are the beginning of life.
They grow into the ballerinas of the forest.
Seedlings are like the toddlers of the forest
they grow up and Up and UP!
Trees are nature’s recyclers.
Their branches are hands reaching up
to the sky for more…
AIR.
Lightning may end some trees’ lives
but they begin new ones
and birds bring messages to god
to add more acorn seeds for the chipmunks crystals.
Some seeds grow and some seeds die.
Some leave something behind.
Nature’s cycle begins new growth.
Now Mother Nature brings you back to the start of life.

Camp
When I go camping I feel a lot.
My parents always let me pick the spot.
A scorpion will destroy your cot.
Sometimes I fell happy; sometimes I feel distraught.
Whatever I catch my dad lets me pot.
And the general tomato will rule; it’s not a little taught.
Banana boy Paul will rule them all.
You better be careful or you will be shot.
Banana boy Paul will be destroyed by a pot
so another great fight will be fought.
Camping is very serious….Not.
I like camping a lot.
Camping is the best and don’t you forget!

Nature
Nature is peace.
Nature is being harmed.
Nature is a perfect world with very little greed
with residents that only take what they need..
Everyone wants to build smoke factories.
and cut down trees.
It destroys the homes of the bugs and the bees.
Animals can be captured and taken away from their homes
and families.
So we can go on strike
to make sure that nothing bad happens to
the homes of the animals of the forest
and the children who work everyday at school.
We can go to government and save the environment
and then go talk to a tree.
~ Composed by The Gross Grasshopper Guts
Pink
Pink is the beads in the wig
pink is a gigantic pig
pink is the colour that makes you think.
Blue stands for the calm and coastal waters
blue is someone drowning in the waters
blue is the sky that never ends
blue stands for the greatest and largest whale.
Yellow is the golden sun
yellow stands for the light bulb at the top of your head
yellow shows when it’s spring
yellow is the emotion of all the happy children of the world.
Red is the anger that spreads like gas
red is the colour that makes our country proud
red is the fire that swallows all in its path
some animals are red and are rare.
Green is toxic in a barrel
green is the smell of sweet cut grass
green stands for the slimy and jumping frog.
Gold is what frames your face
gold is like the sun
gold is the colour that makes us proud
gold is also in the wig.
Colours are an infinite possibility
these colours belong in the beautiful rainbow.
Do not be afraid to show your colours.
