The following poems are group poems written by the children of The Vancouver Public
Library Book Camp. The subjects given for the poems have been included as the titles so
that you can see where they started and where they ended up. A special thank you to all
that participated! It was an amazing experience and we look forward to your future publications.
Summer
It is hot outside,
it's burning,
it's flaming,
but inside it is cool.
I have ice,
I am eating watermelon
and tomorrow
I am going on a vacation to Alaska.
In Alaska there are many big fish
ice cold fresh water
and we go ice fishing.
We can even ride the Icelandic horses
across the landscape.

Summer
Summer is the best
you put your head to rest.
Swimming sports and lots of fun
it's fun to do them in the sun.
Lady bugs and butterflies
and birds fill the skies.
Watermelon and popsicles
I wish I had icicles.
Go to beaches with your friends
summer fun never ends.

Vancouver
Rain more rain
clatters on the window pane,
falling on the mountain tops
helping the trees grow
splashing in the ocean.
No one really cares
because in Vancouver
it is always there.

Vancouver
It smells like urine
but the Chinese food is good.
There are homeless people
by Main and Hastings.
Mango slushies taste great.
Get them at Granville Island
or Crowne Books
where you'll see people biking
in the rain.
Go to the library
get a book,
read it at the beach
then have a snooze.
Transit poetry is good to read,
it keeps me awake when I ride the bus.
London drugs has everything,
games, x-box
but my dad won't let me buy them.
At home in Vancouver
I stay in my room every chance I get
to day-dream about life in Vancouver.

Summer
I go to the beach
and feel the water on my feet,
we buy a lot of popsicles.
the heart warming heat
lights the refreshing green grass.
We go camping and we always have a BBQ,
we have steak and sausage and lamb.
Then before you know it
we have to go back to school shopping
because all good things have come to an end.

Summer
Summer the hot season
homework is gone
and the sound of the sprinklers
moistening the lawn.
Putting all of the sunscreen on
the fun will never end
as long as you are with a friend,
with dripping popsicles and melting ice cream,
making smores around the campfire
and swimming in lakes until the day is gone.
We sleep in tents all night long
but before that we sing campfire songs.
Summer is hot
the green is slowly turning brown.
When I think of school I get a frown
because the fun is long gone until the next year.

Summer
Summer vacation, there is no school,
we go to the pools, just to keep cool.
Splash into pools, summer rules,
put on your lotion or you'll get a sunburn,
hike in the forest to look at the ferns.
Reading and writing and fun at book camp
saying our words and leaving our stamp.
Back to school shopping tells us schools coming near
back to school means starting a new year.

Summer Rocks
Swimming in the pool
camping in the woods,
to beat the heat
eat ice cream and have coca cola.
Fishing in lakes, dive in pools,
go boating, eat hot dogs at BBQs
Sunshine kissed tans
just relaxing in the cool summer breeze.
Going summer shopping,
free time at home,
relaxing but not thinking,
no homework!
Summer Rocks!

Journey
Step by step
I have to haul my luggage
until the porter comes.
I take my train to Mexico
to suntan, swim, snorkel
and para-sail, take pictures.
All of this excitement
makes me hotter than the sun.
Time to go back and bath
in the waters
or eat some ice cream,
mango flavour,
mixed berries or pina colatta.
In my hotel I see my bed
where I will rest until tomorrow.
~ Group K
Summer
Summer is hot
and school is over.
We should stay up late,
change into short clothing
and go swimming in the lakes.
Have some ice cream
play in the shade
and the sun,
eat watermelon, even study.
Going on vacation to Hawaii
don't forget your sunscreen
short sleeves, swimsuits.
Get a rental car
go straight to the beach
then to the hotel to sleep.
