The Astronomy of Mars

I told you the secrets of the Mares
those nights lying on the terrace

inhaling the sky and its shards of stars.
I discovered that the Mares

were nothing but dark craters and valleys
on the planet's desolate sands

and that the two moons of the Martian skies
may have been captured asteroids,

reigned in by the planet's tidal forces,
trapped in their fugitive orbits.

You said only a woman could expose
the sorrows of other planets

as though the stars were whispering to us
their endless cosmic confessions.
