Gena Perala grew up as a Carny Kid, spending much of her childhood traveling with her parents on the carnival circuit…  Perhaps this explains her astute lyrical insight into human nature and the world around us. Her lyrics, combined with her voice, and her willingness to bare all, creates an atmosphere of poignancy and revelation.  Gena started by performing in the Vancouver Poetry Slams before bringing her love of writing and her love of singing together. She has published three books of poetry, "I'm a Worst Case Scenario Type of Girl"(2003), "Clean Getaway"(2005) and most recently "Better Sorry than Safe" (2011).  She has released one solo album "This Ain't Pretty"(2008) on rotation at CBC, and has been working on her second solo album "Exactly Nowhere" (set for release 2012).

‘Celebrating Jerusalem’ is presented by the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery in collaboration with Festival Ha’Rikud, an Israeli dance festival. Through dance, the choreographers and performers will illuminate their interpretation and celebration of this multi-faceted city. Themes include ‘Landscape’, ‘Seasons’, ‘Quarters’ (Jerusalem is divided into four quarters, Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Armenian), ‘Ancient Sites’ and the ‘Shuk’ or open market.
