Selected Poem:

Strawberry Jam

The smell of strawberry jam from a can wafts through the air

And brings me back to my kokums kitchen…

The sunlight pushing it’s way through the door reaching,

The soft, cool wind bringing new smells

While the birds sing and call out to old friends

To ask where they each spent the winter…

The grass just sprouting green and the old melting

into the damp. fresh earth renewing itself…

The soft, freshly made bannock slathered in margarine and jam…

Melts in my mouth…

And the sweetened, warm tea slides down my pleasured throat.

I see the sun reaching further inside as it touches my kokums moccasin

That she is gently tapping on the floor with a soft tshhht tshhht sound

And her labored breathing after cooking and cleaning

making the house smell like it’s a pine tree grove and bakery…

The dogs let out yelps and yips as if to tell each other

That they will no longer be cold because the taste of spring just touched

Their hungry tongues and brought a peace

and that kokum will be giving them leftovers soon.

Watching her little brother gobble the bannock like he was

Some kind of starved animal brings a tightness to her throat

In away that she can’t explain because mom left again

And time didn’t stop…

Neither did the smell of strawberry jam and bannock…
